The Pousada de Elvas - Santa Luzia was the first of the Pousadas de Portugal which opened in 1942 and is a fine example of typical Alentejo architecture. It offers its guests every possible comfort and the best Alentejo cuisine, especially the renowned bacalhau dourado (golden codfish), or its famous dish of pork trotters in a coriander marinade.
The city of Elvas is situated near the border between Portugal and Spain on the main highway between Lisbon and Madrid. It is believed that the town was originally developed by the Romans and it has suffered many conflicts in its history, being liberated from the occupying Moors in 1229 and being involved in peace treaties with neighbouring Spain.
The pousada Santa Luzia has 24 twin and 1 double guest rooms which are all located on the first floor with views over the pool, garden and city. Three of the twin rooms have a balcony and all are air conditioned and equipped with cable television, a mini bar, writing desk, telephone and private bathroom.
The Santa Luzia has two swimming pools – one for adults and one for children – and a tennis court. In the surrounding area you will be able to fish in the dams or rivers, take some long walks in the beautiful countryside, go horse riding and shooting.
