The Pousada Convento de Belmonte stands on the site of the former Nossa Senhora da Esperança Convent on the slopes of the Esperança Mountain, just over a km from the town of Belmonte which is the birthplace of Pedro Álvares Cabral who discovered Brazil.

The Pousada is an excellent base for exploring the many historical monuments in the region, including the castle, the burial vault of the Cabral family, the Judiaria or Jewish Quarter, and the mysterious Centum Cellas, as well as the natural beauty and folk traditions of Serra da Estrela (Estrela´s Mountain), one of the Europe’s most important natural reserves.

The Pousada of Belmonte has preserved the Monastery’s heritage including its amphitheatre architecture lay out in the pine woods on the slopes of Esperança´s Mountain, and stunning landscape with views over the Cova da Beira region and Estrela’s Mountain. The chapel and sacristy have been sympathetically converted into the lounge and bar.

The Pousada has 24 rooms: 21 double and 3 suites which have friar’s names instead of numbers. All include air conditioning, Cable TV, a Mini-bar, hair dryer, in room safe, bath robes and direct dial telephone.

The pousada has its own swimming pool and nearby activities on offer include Four-wheel driving, Horse riding, Fishing , Country walks and the Belmonte River Beach.
